Frank Fernández

Frank Fernández, pianist, composer and pedagogue, was born in Mayarí, county of Holguin, Cuba, March 16 of 1944. He begins to play the piano "of having heard" to the 4 years old. One year later had as first teacher to his mother, Altagracia Tamayo, directress of Orbón Academy in her native town.

Frank Fernández like pianist of classic music was formed with some of the best teachers in the world. Throughout his more than 40 years like artist, he stores critical that qualify him as "a person touched by divinity", "one of the masterful interpreters of the universal music in highest moments" or "something without precedents, an unforgettable pianist”, among other.

Frank Fernández, famous personality of the piano in Cuba, has been recognized by the public and the critic of 33 countries like an outstanding figure of the world music. It reaffirms it, his artistic trajectory as interpreter of almost all the classic and popular genres, his contributions to the pedagogy of the piano in Cuba, his compositions, orchestrations, investigations, records and his works of cultural promoter.

Frank Fernández's Art has his genesis in four fundamental pillars:

• The lump-sum appropriation of the principal elements of the piano profession of the XIX century, through his teacher Margot Rojas, Alexander Lambert’s alumna, pupil at his same time of Franz Liszt.
• His knowledge of the famous Russian school of piano, received during the 5 years of superior studies with the great pianist and Professor Emérito Victor Merzhánov, in Tchaikovski Conservatoire of Moscow, culminated it with "Summa cum laude".
• The domain of the enormous wealth of the tradition in Cuba during the XIX and XX centuries through his investigations and recordings of Manuel Saumell's work, Ignacio Cervantes and Ernesto Lecuona.
• The early entailment with the better exponents of popular Cuban music and Latin American.

Frank Fernández since 1959 maintains a brilliant career like soloist showing up in noted rooms of musical tradition of Europe, Asia and Latin America such as: Moscow, Paris, Tokyo, Berlin, Madrid, Warsaw, Prague, Luxemburg, Barcelona, Riga, Osaka, as well as in concerts with orchestras from Russia, Japan, Bulgaria, Mexico, Brazil, Romania, Holland, Colombia, Germany, Korea, Yugoslavia, Venezuela, Viet Nam, Poland, Dominican Republic and Cuba among other.

Frank Fernández, original pianist of the county of Holguin, has written more than 650 works for different formats, from ballets, choirs and symphonies going by works for groupings of popular music, sound bands for cinema (among those Strawberry and Chocolate movie), television and radio. He has also worked with artists like Silvio Rodríguez, Vicente Feliú, Pancho Amat and others.
